How to Drive Safely in the Snow like a Pro?

Jun 29, 2021, 7:28 pm / Abigail Williams

However much of an expert you might be in driving, if there is one terrain that is a big challenge to all, it is undoubtedly snow. Places with deep and heavy winters do get a lot of snow throughout the season and a lot of it is on the roads itself. However much the local authorities try, they are generally not able to completely de-ice and remove all the snow before the main traffic kicks in. This makes driving in snow inevitable for people who are inhabitants of such places.

The main reason for these kinds of difficulties is due to the fact that the coefficient of friction between the ice-covered route and the tire reduces drastically. To give you some perspective, a coefficient of 1 is close to ideal, however, during the snowing period, the coefficient can turn as low as 0.08. This can almost be compared to rubbing two pieces of Teflon against each other.

Another impending problem is the fact that places like these get unpredictable snowfalls most of the time, so a bout might start while you are driving. Visibility becomes really poor, which can cause tremendous problems. Even if you are really an expert in driving, snow driving warrants some precautions for sure. Change of tires to something more conducible and having a larger coefficient of friction with larger treads might be severely useful. You could also use gears for better visibility. Some of the tips regarding driving in snow have been discussed in details here.

1. Use proper headlights

Visibility is markedly reduced when there is heavy snowing. Driving safely is easy if proper precautions are taken. One such step is to keep the headlights on at full power when you are driving. You can even use the fog lights. This will not only help you see better but also let any vehicle coming from the opposite become aware of your presence. Many accidents can be prevented by this simple step.

2. Make use of additional helpful technology like Lanmodo Night Vision System

This system is definitely a boon for people driving in the snow. It uses natural- colored lights which gives a better view of the road ahead and reflections from snow do not hamper much. A wide angle of 45 degrees is provided, broadening the field of vision. The distance of visibility is also increased to 300 meters which are way more than normal human eyes.

Lanmodo Vast Pro Night Vision Systemcomes with a High Definition IPS screen as well, with a resolution of 1080p which gives a clear display of what lies ahead so that you can adjust your driving accordingly. Judging from all these points it can be fairly said that this technology is an absolute necessity for people driving in such inclement weather

3. Be careful when you drive up a slope

If you make the mistake of pushing on the gas while going up a slope covered in ice, you will not have much success as your wheels will keep turning and spinning around the same area. The technique for snow driving is a little different. You have to start from a flat ground a little farther down, gain some momentum, accelerate and then let the inertia do the rest of the work. It goes without saying that you have to be very careful with the handling of the steering wheel.

4. Don't ride fast, slow down

This is common sense and does not require any further stress as such. You are not supposed to drive fast when you are driving on snow. As it is, there is no traction between the tire and the road. On top of that, increased speed and acceleration will lead to more rotation per minute which will lead to the tire slipping. Despite the repeated warning, most numbers of accidents take place in the snow because of driving fast in the snow. Driving too fast also means that you will have to brake hard, which is also a major problem.

5. Don't look to take the path of another car

Cars leave a tire track when they are driven on snow. When you are driving on a covered track, simply following that track might seem tempting as the path has already been led. However, the snow is compressed in this area which will lead to a worse grip of the tires. Therefore, definitely not a good idea.

6. Manage spinning away motion

Anyone who has adequate experience in driving in the snow will tell you that losing control of the car and its spinning away motion is an impending hazard. The trick is to stay composed and figure out which way the rear end is headed. That is the direction in which you have to point the wheel in order to regain control. Braking and steering too hard are the common mistakes that people do and should be avoided at all costs.

7. Get your car maintenance done regularly

Snowing means the extreme temperature which means that your car engine and other parts are prone to damage easily. Therefore, be aware of whatever might be required and get the maintenance done periodically to avoid any undue problems.

Just follow these above-mentioned steps and master the skill of driving in the snow easily.
