Safety Advice for Driving Through Tunnels

Jun 29, 2021, 3:37 pm / Lara

Driving through tunnels can make your trips faster and more convenient. However, because of the closed road environment, driving through these can be dangerous when you do not pay particular attention to safety. Here are some tips that can help you prevent accidents from happening and keep you and your passengers safe on your travels that involve tunnels.

Part 1. Approaching the Tunnel

First of all, you should check your car dashboard gauges, including speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, oil pressure gauge, water temperature gauge and so on. If you are to drive through a tunnel, you need to make sure that your vehicle is running at a normal state. It is safe to know that no warning signs of your car are lit up, because a breakdown during tunnel is frustrating.

1. Turn on low beam lights

As you approach any tunnel, switch on your headlights and make sure that it is low beam, to light up just a small area in the front of your car. Low beams also point more toward the ground, so they are not likely to blind other drivers. Full beam headlights while driving through tunnels will put motorists, including you, in danger. Why, because they are angled higher and direct into the eyes of the driver who is coming onto you.

2. Pay attention to road signs

These signs may be about height restrictions, lane closures, tunnel length and speed limits within the tunnel. Also, you can tune in to the local traffic radio channels, as the road sign information may also be available on those channels. Modern tunnels has a system that allows radio signals to be transmitted to the tunnel, by the control room operator. Also, follow the directions that are shown on the signage and watch out for any notice of changes on speed limits.

3. Keep a longer distance

Keep your distance from the cars in front of you, even in slow traffic. There is a rule that says you should leave 3 seconds of space between your car and the one in front. Take extra care when driving through road tunnels, as they are very different from the open roads where you can easily stop when necessary. It can be particularly dangerous when accidents happen in the enclosed spaces of a road tunnel.

Part 2. Through the Tunnel

1. Use car night vision camera

While tunnel interiors are illuminated so that traffic can enter, pass through and exit safely, most drivers find it difficult to adjust immediately to the light within, after being used to the light outside of the tunnel. The Lanmodo Vast Pro is a new product that can help increase your perception and view distance when you drive through a tunnel.

When you feel that your visibility is compromised, the night vision camera is of great help to human vision. It needs just faint light to provide a crisp and clear picture of the road ahead in full color. The screen is large at 8” and with 1080p resolution, you get a zoomed view of the road ahead.

The Lanmodo Vast Pro offers a visibility distance of 300m or 984 ft. It has a 45-degree angle that allows you a broader view of the road than what you normally expect. If you drive often through a tunnel or at night or in rainy/foggy weather, this is a good option worth considering.

The innovative product is very easy to install, in fact, you can perform the installation yourself. You don't need to take your car to the shop to have the night vision camera installed. Simply follow the instructions that come with the product and you're done. Moreover, it is affordably priced, which means that it is sold at a price that is within your budget.

2. Observe Speed Limits

Speed limits in tunnels are enforced; hence should be followed. Disregarding the posted speed limits may cause accidents on the road tunnels, as your reaction time is greatly reduced. When you follow speed limits (or drive slower than the speed limit), the risk of crashing is reduced and you arrive safely at your destination.

3. Do not stop, except when there is an emergency situation

Avoid breaking suddenly, especially when traffic inside the tunnel is heavier. When there are multiple lanes, try not to change lanes, for the sake of everybody's safety. Also, avoid taking a U-turn.
