Top 9 Bad Driving Habits You Should Avoid

Jul 22, 2019, 8:59 am / Brian Lageose

Most people, especially new drivers, tend to have bad driving habits that can be quite dangerous in the long run. Some of them don't even know that those are bad driving behaviors and others are just ignorant. It is worth noting that how you conduct yourself while driving plays a role in your safety and that of other road users. You should learn about bad driving habits and try to avoid getting caught in the middle. Here are some of the important things you should avoid making the road a safer place for everyone.

# Rushing to the car and driving away

In the heat of the moment, you might get in your car and storm off. Another thing that will rush you to your car is when you are in a hurry to get somewhere. This might seem okay since you are an experienced driver but it is not advisable. You should check around the car for pets that sometimes rest on the sides of car tires. Also, driving in a hasty state can lead to accidents.

# Loud car audio

Driving while listening to your favorite music is usually relaxing. A bad driving habit is when you put the volume too high. The audio gets so loud and this might interfere with your hearing when other cars are honking or horning at you. Also, it can also be a nuisance to other road users and destruct other drivers. Ensure that you keep the music volume as low as possible.

# Accelerating and instant braking

When accelerating forward, other road users know that you are on the move and they follow suit. But moving forward and then stepping on the brakes all of a sudden can be quite fatal. The vehicle behind you might run into you and those that follow into each other. Just be careful not to do that as it is dangerous.

# Stopping without checking in the rear mirror

Stopping your car without looking at the rear mirror might cause accidents as well. You should know that other cars are behind you and are in motion. The driver in the other car doesn't know that you are stopping and it is your duty to alert them on your action. You can only do that when you know they are behind you by looking at the rear mirror.

# A sudden change of roads

While driving, there comes a time when you need to change lanes or turn onto another road. A sudden change from one lane to another can put you in harm's way. You should first use your turn signals to avoid cars behind you from running into your car.

# Throwing things through the car window

You are always advised not to litter anywhere and that is why you will find litter containers even on the streets as you walk. However, there those people who think that this is not applicable on the road while driving. You will see them throwing things from the windows. Not only is it littering, but it also can be very dangerous to other road users. Some things like paper bags and other items may fly into other drivers' windscreens and destruct them from seeing the road clearly. This may lead to accidents.

# Unnecessary horn honking

When you are inside your vehicle, the noise from horn honking is not as loud as it is outside. Therefore, indiscriminate honking is not only destructive but also causes road-rage to other drivers. Only honk when necessary like when communicating or alerting other drivers of a problem with your vehicle. Honking to express anger is not a solution to let road users know they are using the road badly. It will only enrage them. In some countries, horn honking is restricted to certain hours.

# Joking and fighting

If you have company while driving, you can engage in small talk to prevent you from getting bored. However, joking and fighting is bad while driving. You can crack your jokes and end up laughing so hard while driving and this can be dangerous. Also, if you are arguing, you should just park beside the road and settle your argument as they can turn into fights. Fighting while driving can lead to collisions.

# Little to no car maintenance

There is no doubt that driving on the road gives you a certain thrilling experience. this is because you can actually get in the car and drive to whichever place you please. However, failure to have proper car maintenance can remove the fun out of your driving. Driving in a dirty car is not a good idea, therefore, you should ensure that you leave the house with a clean car. Also, you should protect it from the damages of the hot sun by parking in the garage or under a shade.
If you don't have a garage or a shed for your car, then use a car tent to provide shade. When a car stays out in the sun for too long, the rays can damage the car's finish.
