How to Protect Your Vehicle from UV Rays Damage in Summer?

May 14, 2019, 10:02 am / Evelyn Smith

Everyone knows that UV rays can damage your skin. But that's not all that they can damage. Did you know that exposure to UV rays can harm the exterior and interior of your vehicle? The results are pretty much the same. Your vehicle's interior and exterior dry out and wear out faster too. It means that you end up having the vehicle repainted and the interiors redone more frequently than you otherwise would.

It isn't just the cosmetic aspect you have to worry about. Constant exposure to UV rays can even damage your engine. After all, temperatures on vehicle exteriors can be as high as 195 degree Farenheit, while inside the vehicle they can reach up to 145 degree Farenheit. This begs the question - what can you do to protect your car in the summer? Well, there are steps you can take to protect both the interior and exterior of your vehicle. Let's take a look at some of them.

Interior of Your Vehicle

As mentioned earlier, temperatures inside your vehicle can reach 145 degree Farenheit. Basically, heat from the sun's rays gets trapped inside your vehicle, making it feel like an oven. The materials you use in the interior of your car such as leather, vinyl and plastic are also vulnerable to damage because of exposure to direct sunlight and the attendant UV rays. Here's what you need to do to protect your vehicle's interiors.

  1. Park your vehicle in the shade - Whenever you can, park your vehicle in a shady spot. This ensures that direct sunlight doesn't reach your vehicle as easily and your dash and trim are shielded. Also, if it's safe, you might want to crack the window open just a smidge to let the heated air out.
  2. Use car windshield shades - The windows of your car basically act like the glass in a greenhouse. Not only do they let light and heat in, they trap them there and magnify them. This bleaches the seat covers and the dash and eventually cracks them. Car windshield shades are reflective. They block the sun's rays from reaching exposed areas and keep the vehicle interior cooler.
  3. Use seat covers - To prevent leather or vinyl from fading and cracking, cover them with seat covers. Depending on the material you use, not only do they protect your seats, but also keep them cool.
  4. Wipe down the interior - Use a microfiber cloth to clean out dust particles. The heat can bake them into the interiors creating permanent stains. A regular cleanup prevents this.
  5. Use conditioners - Keep your vehicle interiors moisturized so that they don't crack or fade easily. If you have leather interiors, use a leather conditioner.

Exterior of Your Vehicle

Your car's paint is exposed to more than just dust and grime. Pollen, air particles, bugs and bird droppings are just some of the things you have to contend with. While you can't completely eliminate this exposure, you can limit it a lot by using a sun shade for your car.
