Mar 27, 2019, 9:07 am / Richard

Now that the cold is subsiding and the sun is beginning to peek its way through the clouds, maybe it's time to start thinking about some spring car care to help your car recover from the harsh weather and keep it shiny. Here's how to make it sparkle and be the envy of all your neighbors.

1. Undercarriage Cleaning

The undercarriage of your car is prone to collecting dust, salt and de-icing chemicals used for the road when winter. You can clean all of this off either by using a garden hose, or alternatively most professional car wash places will offer and undercarriage blast.

2. Paint Chips Repairing

In winter, roads will be covered with salt and sand to ease slipping. While practical, they can however, have a negative effect on your cars paint job. If you want to restore your car to its former glory by simply touching up any paint chips. It's advised you use a primer, touch-up paint and a top-coat to make the final result not only look great but last longer too. If there's any rust, be sure to sand it down first for a smooth result. Then taking a small brush, apply your primer, paint and top-coat, leaving each layer to dry in-between. You can purchase these items at most car dealerships or online.

3. Tire Pressure Checking

Now that the weather is getting warmer, you may find that your tire pressure is higher than necessary. When temperatures get warmer, gas can expand. You'll want to check this with a gauge, you should be able to easily find one at any automotive store. Making sure your tires are cold, insert the gauge into the valve stem on your tire. Once you have a reading, compare the psi on the gauge to the psi found either on a sticker inside your car or in your owner's manual. Should your reading be higher than this number, let a little air out until it matches. Should it be too low, put some more in.

4. Complete Washing and Waxing

It's important to make sure you thoroughly wash off all the debris winter left behind on your car. A good wash and wax can leave any car looking sparkling new fresh from the dealer. Start by giving your car a good hose down to remove debris, then give it a good wipe all over the body using a solution of car shampoo and warm water. It's recommended you use either a sponge or a soft bristle brush for the best finish. Dry your car using a chamois, as cloths can leave behind fibers which will be detrimental to the final result. Car wax often comes with an applicator, in the event it doesn't a foam sponge will do just as well. Work in circular motions to apply, then leave the wax to haze. Simply buff off with a microfiber cloth, and you're done!

5. Removing the Mats and Vacuuming the Carpets

It's easy to bring the elements in with you when getting in your vehicle. There will likely be a build-up of dirt and debris on your cars floor. Be sure to remove your car mats, give them a good wipe down and thoroughly vacuum the flooring underneath using a specialized car vacuum.

6. Under the Hood Caring

It's not just the outside of your car that might be needing some love and attention, the inside is just as important! Keeping it clean under the hood is vital for your car's health. Ensuring your engine is cold, start by covering up any parts liable to water damage, such as electricals, the air intake and the alternator. After rinsing with water first, use car washing soap and degreaser to wipe away any dirt, grease and debris. Rinse again, and dry using a microfiber cloth.

7. Outside Parking Protecting

You may think conditions such as heavy snow or hot sun is a big deal when leaving your car in open-air parking, however did you think about elements such as rain, bird droppings, tree sap, bugs or industrial fallout too?
